The City has completed a Master Plan for Coodanup Foreshore to help maximise this connection between our people and our environment along this key foreshore area.

How has the design been created?

Our foreshore areas provide important spaces to connect with the waterways which define our meeting place of the heart. Improving our facilities and amenities and nurturing the natural environment in these spaces ensures the whole community can enjoy the space.

Community feedback has been a key part of the design process to-date with community consultation completed during the development of the initial master plan.

The desire to retain the foreshore’s existing character was made clear during consultation and in response to this, the upgrade focuses on four key areas of improvement:

Feedback on the Stage 3 Concept Design emphasised the importance of these areas of improvement and additional focus points for this specific section of the foreshore including improved recreational facilities, additional planting and enhancement of the natural environment, a cafe, toilet facilities, improved accessibility, additional parking, educational signage, and dog restrictions. The Stage 3 design proposes improved path connections along the estuary including a trail walk along the water's edge and footpaths to the foreshore from Peel Parade. Existing footpaths have been retained and new seating and picnic settings will replace outdated furniture providing greater accessibility and comfort whilst increasing opportunities to sit and stay.

The realignment of the existing car park at the Creery Wetland end has created a footpath connection alongside the carpark, improving access to the water and addressing stormwater management through water-sensitive urban design

Since the development of the original masterplan, consideration has been given to the recently located giant ‘Yaburgurt Cirkelstone’ with bike racks to be installed along the path, picnic facilities located close by, as well as a ‘yarning’ circle to accommodate groups.

Consultation for interpretive signage and artworks are to commence with a focus on Coodanup’s environmental and cultural heritage as well as its significance as a Ramsar Wetland. Education on how to respect and protect the environment will be integrated into the signage design.

Project History

The City of Mandurah has prepared a Landscape Masterplan for Coodanup Foreshore Reserve, located on Peel Parade between Wanjeep Street and the end of John Street to the Serpentine River, Coodanup, on the northern foreshore of the Peel Harvey Estuary.

The Peel Harvey Estuary sits inside the boodjar (country) of the Bindjareb (Pinjarup) Noongar people. The Bindjareb people refer to the Peel Harvey estuary as Djilba. This is the ancient name used for thousands of years. Both names are used on the Masterplan.

Why do we need a new plan and development?

A framework was needed to update the area, manage this valuable community space, and address future opportunities form a more vibrant space while respecting the local environmental values.

The Coodanup Foreshore Reserve is a large and popular reserve which spans approximately 2.6 kilometres and a total of 15.9 hectares. The foreshore forms a part of the Peel-Yalgorup System, which is listed under the Ramsar Convention 's List of Wetlands of International Importance. The City recognises the foreshore reserve as a valued community asset with well-established facilities, trees and foreshore habitat and activities. However, the current standard of the foreshore falls short of the standard expected for key foreshore reserves that have a Regional Reserve classification. The opportunity to improve the reserve has been recognised and the City has worked to address this by developing a masterplan for the full project site.
