Draft Place Enrichment Strategy

Mandurah is a place where everyone matters. Together, our local communities and the City, strive to provide a sense of belonging, opportunity and connectedness that nurtures a place where everyone can lead a life they value.

The development of a Place Enrichment Strategy is the next step for the City moving into a meaningful, place-based approach setting out how City officers work collaboratively to support, enhance and engage with residents and community groups to work together in proactive, effective ways.

Consultants were contracted by the City in August 2022 to develop the Place Enrichment Strategy utilising a community engagement and co-design approach with the community and stakeholders.

The City’s brief to the consultants for a Place Enrichment Strategy was one that;

• Generates positive, resilient and cohesive communities.
• Strengthens community and social connectedness.
• Fosters pride, active citizenship and a sense of belonging.
• Optimises the allocation of City resources for maximum community benefit to where the places and people need it the most.
• Provides a roadmap to generate ideas and implement them.
• Enables the community to create and lead initiatives that shape their community in positive ways, acknowledging the City may need to play more of an active, direct role in some places.
• Developed a practical outcomes-measurement process that could be implemented by the City to measure the impact of the Place Enrichment Strategy over the course of its implementation.

The Place Enrichment Strategy works to build local capacity, resilience and community pride, along with community ownership – giving local people the opportunity to be involved and create vibrant, thriving communities. Place-based activities and actions will enhance the current strengths of local communities and work with the community in a strength-based model that will have positive impacts across all areas. Research shows that communities that are connected do better, as:

• opportunities to link into local activities lead to the development of transferrable skills and confidence.
• people who are connected to their area and have pride will take ownership of their environment.

The draft Place Enrichment Strategy has been developed to reflect the strengths, needs and aspirations of the various neighbourhoods across Mandurah. The City is now seeking community feedback on the draft strategy.
